PCI Receives Grant from Wilson Legacy Fund to Help Children's Caregivers

Cheektowaga, NY – The Palliative Care Institute (PCI) research team received an $11,384 grant from The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Legacy Funds (Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo). These funds will support the 2018 research project, “Photographs of Meaning Program: A social media intervention for caregivers of seriously ill children.”
This Photographs of Meaning (POM) program aims to improve the lives of pediatric palliative caregivers by increasing meaning-making, well-being, and social support. Through the use of photography, story-telling and social media, participants share their trials and triumphs of being a caregiver. At the end of the program, participants choose their favorite photograph and story to be shared at a community photo exhibit, thereby further empowering them and honoring their experiences. POM was created by PCI, in collaboration with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center  and the University at Buffalo Department of Communication, and has been presented nationally and internationally at The Annual Assembly for Hospice and Palliative Care, The Association for Death Education and Counseling Conference, and the American Psychological Association Conference.
Palliative Care Buffalo’s Essential Care for Children caregivers first participated in this innovative intervention in 2017. The second iteration of this program launched on July 23, 2018, with a new group of participants. The community photo exhibit, entitled “Embracing Uncertainty: Caring for Seriously Ill Children,” will be open to the public at UB Art Gallery on North Campus Oct 2–13, 2018 with an opening night community reception October 2 at 6–8 pm.
